With the Bank of Thailand’s policy rate at 1.00% since February, the deposit side of that equation is anchored low. That sounds like a good thing for bank margins. But it is more complicated in practice.

The issue is on the loan side. The Federal Reserve is about to raise rates to 3.75%–4.00%. Thai corporations with dollar-denominated debt — and there are many, particularly in the energy, aviation, and export sectors — face higher servicing costs on that debt. Higher dollar debt costs mean tighter cash flows for these companies, which translates into elevated credit risk on the loan books of the Thai banks that financed them.

It also affects the consumer side. Thailand’s household debt-to-GDP ratio remains one of the highest in Southeast Asia. When energy costs rise (as they have with Brent near $92–95), households spend more on fuel and electricity, leaving less for loan repayments. The squeeze on household cash flows is not reflected in NPL ratios immediately — there is typically a 1–2 quarter lag before payment stress shows up in reported data.

The Oil Pass-Through to Bank Balance Sheets

The mechanism between high oil prices and bank asset quality is indirect but real. PTT and its group companies, which are major borrowers in the Thai banking system, face higher crude input costs. If PTT’s refining margins compress — which happens when crude is high and domestic retail price controls limit pass-through — its free cash flow is reduced, which affects its debt servicing capacity and its investment schedule.

More broadly, energy-intensive businesses across the Thai economy — petrochemicals, cement, food processing, transportation — face higher operating costs that compress their interest coverage ratios. A company that could comfortably cover its debt service at $75 Brent might be running tighter at $95 Brent, especially if revenue growth has not kept pace.

Which Thai Banks Are Most Exposed

Exposure varies by bank. KBank (KBANK) has a relatively diversified retail and SME loan portfolio, with less concentration in large corporate energy borrowers. Bangkok Bank (BBL) has significant corporate lending exposure, including cross-border loans with Asian exposure. Krungthai Bank (KTB), as a state-linked bank, often holds more energy sector and government-related corporate loans.

SCB (SCB) has been pushing into digital banking and personal loans — an area that shows faster NPL movements in response to consumer cash flow stress than secured corporate lending. Krungsri (BAY) with its significant auto loan portfolio is watching carefully as higher fuel costs affect car owners’ total transportation spend.

None of these banks are in distress — their capital ratios remain well above regulatory minimums. But the margin on their profitability is being squeezed from directions that were not all present simultaneously in previous cycles.

The Rate Gap and Foreign Flows

There is another banking sector issue tied directly to the BoT-Fed rate gap. Thailand’s government bond yields and bank deposit rates remain well below US rates. This means Thai baht assets are structurally unattractive to foreign portfolio investors on a yield basis. Foreign outflows from the SET — which have been a persistent theme in 2026 — are partly driven by this yield gap. When US Treasuries offer 3.75%+ with no credit risk in dollars, the case for holding Thai bank shares (which offer dividend yields of 3%–5% but in baht, with FX and credit risk) is harder to make.

The September 10 morning session showed THB 43.15 billion in trading volume, and the index dipped 2.62 points or 0.16%. That kind of light-volume drift is typical of a market where domestic buyers are cautious and foreign buyers are largely absent.

What This Means for Thai Investors Holding Bank Shares

Thai bank stocks are not value traps — they are trading at moderate multiples (price-to-book of roughly 0.6–1.0x depending on the bank) and offer real dividend income. But the near-term earnings pressure from the NIM squeeze and potential NPL uptick means Q3 results (reporting in late October) could disappoint relative to the first half of 2026.

The bull case for Thai banks in Q4 is a Fed pivot signal at the October or December FOMC meeting, combined with oil falling back below $85. That combination would reduce dollar debt servicing pressure, ease household cash flow stress, and make BoT easing more likely — which would stimulate domestic credit demand without the same NIM compression risk.

Watch Points

SET banking sector trading volume: Heavy volume on up days indicates institutional accumulation. Light volume drift is indecisive — the current pattern.

October Q3 results: Watch KBANK, BBL, KTB for NIM trends, provisioning levels, and management guidance on NPL outlook.

BoT’s October 28 meeting: Any change in language toward future easing would be constructive for bank shares — lower future funding costs and higher domestic credit demand.

Foreign investor flow data: Published daily by the SET. Sustained foreign buying in the banking sector would signal a shift in the macro view.

At 1,617, the SET is not cheap enough to buy blindly, nor expensive enough to sell aggressively. The banking sector specifically needs either macro relief (lower oil, dovish Fed) or a Q3 earnings surprise before the next meaningful directional move.

SET stands at 1,617 with Thai bank stocks under simultaneous pressure: the Fed-BoT rate divergence is tightening lending spreads while elevated oil prices are eroding borrowers’
